The Coalman has become my new favorite spot in Newcastle! From the morning coffee and breakfast to the evening cocktails wine and dinner the place is a culinary treat. Its small and comfortable and friendly staff there to welcome you. The food is fresh and creative. They make their own pastries daily , the bread is from Grand Central, the coffee is cafe Umbria. - its quality all the way around. The woman who owns it has other restaurants in Ballard. She also grew up in Newport Hills and the name The Coalman is after the coal mining industry that is part of the history of the area. I wish them much success.

I’m SO glad I finally stopped by the Coalman! Saddled in the Safeway strip mall, this spot is such an unexpected gem in the Newcastle area. The vibes are upscale and modern: the perfect place for an intimate date night or drinks and light bites with the ladies. Every drink and dish we tried on the menu was unique and had complexity. Each component felt intentional and had standout flavors. Who knew fried olives could be so delicious!? I look forward to going back and getting to try more soon!

Great atmosphere and friendly service! Thanks to Seattle Restaurant Week, I randomly picked this restaurant and discovered a true gem. The duck leg confit tasted just like the one I loved at a Paris bistro. Perfect spot for gatherings or a quick workday escape.

We love this neighborhood spot! Amazing food and great wine & cocktails. Above all, the staff are so welcoming and great. I highly recommend their dinner service and their happy hour (currently 3-5). Recommendations: any of their specials, their (vegetarian) lasagna, chicken pot pie, savory cheesecake, all the apps. They also have a wine club you can look up on their website. Definitely recommend this place for a date, after work to wait for traffic to die down, a special occasion or family meal. They have some cute outdoor seating and are family friendly. I would recommend reservations or at least looking but they also have a small bar you can sit at. On weekends I recommend a reservation as they are in a smaller space (don't let the location across from the Newcastle library in the shopping plaza fool you-this is a great gem). You will feel comfortable as you are, or dressed up here too. The friendly owner is often around to welcome you and make sure you are having a great experience! Parking is easy, it's friendly to persons with a disability, and there are vegetarian options. I am sure you can ask about other dietary restrictions. They have a great vibe and lovely art.

This is just what Newcastle/Renton areas needed- a chill, bougie, flavorful, healthy restaurant. We loved it! The wine and drink menu was fabulous- we had the dry rose and macchiato. The warm potato salad had a lemon creme herb sauce on it that was to die for, and we just loved everything and everyone- the owner, Jen, came out and chatted with us too- it was so nice and delicious! We recommend everything we had and can't wait try their other dishes

Hidden little gem. Had amazing food and good atmosphere. Everything we ordered did not disappoint- deviled eggs, carrot tahini dip, burrata, duck confit sliders, braised lamb plate and closed with affogato and warm crisp cake.
